Captain N.J. "Dusty" Kleiss

Miscellany

The Air Force bombed but missed. Our Navy dive-bombing pilots didn't. My bomb hit just behind the super structure and slightly to the port side, where the white smoke is pouring out.

This picture was taken by Lt.(j.g.) C.J. Dobson, also of Scouting Six at 1900 (7 p.m.). Only three or four dozen survivors are clustered near the stern. The ship sank during the night.

The two aircraft carriers I hit two days earlier sank much faster. Of course I was not the only pilot who hit these ships.

N.J. "Dusty" Kleiss was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions at Midway. In this photo, Kleiss is third from the right. Admiral Nimitz is presenting the awards.
